The Art of Styling Shelves
One of the easiest (and most affordable) ways to change up your décor is to restyle what you have on display.
Whether it’s an office bookcase, open shelving above a TV, or glass-front cabinets in your kitchen, reorganizing items can boost your spirits and make what’s old seem new again.
So… where to begin?
Blend Different Items and Styles
Don’t get me wrong - I love books. But they’re not the only thing you should show off on your shelves! Mix it up by including plants, pottery, artwork, glassware, mirrors, photos, baskets, and more.
Incorporate Height
For visual interest, have a variety of tall and short items available to utilize as you restyle. Some of this can also be achieved by stacking books in different directions as needed. Utilize a zigzag pattern of items of similar heights throughout; it’s a simple way to keep the eye moving across your design on stacked shelves.
Layer Away
Place larger items – such as books, artwork, or mirrors – toward the back of each shelf. Then incorporate medium-sized accents nearby or on top. For extra visual interest, place small plants or candles in front of the other items, to add depth.
To achieve a specific “look”:
Mix Neutrals
Remove the covers or flip books around so their spines are facing the back of your shelf, to create a calming color palette.
Make a Rainbow
Organize items according to “ROYGBIV,” incorporating neutrals on each end. Blend different shades throughout each unique section of color to add to the aesthetic.
Create Vignettes
Combine themed items together to personalize your design and show off your interests. For example, if you’re into cooking, group an antique scale, cookbooks, a framed recipe, and small pot of herbs onto the same shelf.
Most importantly: have fun, and enjoy the results!
